Project 4 — Video Tracking Composite

Project Information

Name of Assignment: Project 4 — Video Tracking Composite

Class: Special Topics Art & Design – Compositing

Due Date: 4/16/2021

Date Posted: 4/16/2021

Program: Adobe After Effects

Project Description: Using skills learned in class, we had to paint an object out of a backplate and replaced it with a keyed out subject from a green screen video. The subject had to follow the movement of the video and be color corrected to fit in.

Chosen Backplate

I decided to play with the scale of a human subject by placing it in an environment where things normally tiny would appear larger. I shot the film on top of my desk and placed a stuffed animal to show size reference and add an element of ‘drama’ to the piece.

Backplate Patch

I tracked the replacement object, the duck’s, movement and painted it out to create an even plane for my subject to stand on. I had to adjust and keyframe the saturation and brightness of the patch to match the lighting change throughout the video. I also motion tracked a vertical space for the subject later on.

Motion Tracking Subject

I filmed my subject, Zachary Serio, looking around and ducking to match the timing of the tone shift in the backplate.

Motion Tracking Final Project

I keyed out my subject and tied it to the vertical data I had previously gathered. I tried to match the colors as best as possible, but had some issues with the darks when Zach crouches down. I then added a shadow to the subject.

Motion Tracking Revised

After the critique on this project, it was pointed out to me that the lighting and color of the subject in the video did not quite match the backplate. I tried my best to match the colors where the lighting changes, and I think it definitely is improved from the last iteration although it still a little seems off to me.
